GLORIA LOUGHMAN WORKSHOPS

FERNIE OCTOBER 18TH- 26TH 2008
2 DAY WORKSHOP $220.00
3 DAY WORKSHOP $280.00
OCTOBER 18 & 19 – ESCAPE TO THE
RAINFOREST
Giant buttressed trees, verdant mosses, delicate lacy tree ferns and
twisted vines stretching from forest floor to the
top of the canopy make up our majestic rainforests. In this class,
participants will have the opportunity to create
their own rainforest quilt, painting and sponging a background fabric then
appliquéing a forest of vegetation on the
surface. Back ground construction, machine appliqué and embroidery, 3-D
appliqué and extra painting techniques
will be covered. I will provide patterns for many of the trees and plants
in a rainforest and participants can bring
photos and drawings of any vegetation they think will be suitable. The
class is based on a rainforest but any type of
wooded area can be used as inspiration.
OCTOBER 21, 22 & 23 – PLAYING ON THE SURFACE
Participants will create an abstract design while improving their machine
embroidery and appliqué skills. The class
begins with a segment on design principles and advice on how to choose
stunning and effective colour
combinations. Breaking up the background into many smaller segments,
students move on to decorate the surface of
each one with a myriad of shapes, providing extra detail with machine
embroidery. Towards the end of the class,
instruction is given for 'easy to master' construction techniques and
quilting designs will be discussed. Based on the
skills used to create 'Kimberley Mystique' the wall hangings produced in
this workshop will definitely be 'one of a
kind'.
OCTOBER 25 & 26– LAYER BY LAYER
This class is for students who want to take that next step and experiment
with design and color. In this workshop
participants will combine elements of landscape in an abstract way to
create a small wall hanging that is unique and
visually exciting. Techniques such as mosaics, foundation piecing, soft
edge appliqué and invisible machine
appliqué will be included.
There will be patterns available for three abstract designs or students
can design their own.
